Toby Appel and his friends presented a lively concert centered on the viola. Several patrons mentioned that they really like the mellow sound of the viola. Appel presented music by Clarke, Friskin and Bridge, composers that may be new to many of our patrons. Appel said that the Frank Bridge piece was written for him by a former student and it was so much fun to hear for the first time. There's something satisfying about the sound of two violas, their interlocking harmonies, the way their sounds complete each other.
Rafael Figueroa and Orion Weiss added more tone colors to the mix in the Hummel and Brahms trios. Appel spoke about Hummel's musical connections and it was very impressive to hear that he was linked to Mozart, Beethoven, Schubert and more notables. The music was lively and satisfying.
The Brahms trio provided a fitting end piece to the concert.
