Music at Bunker Hill connects with students in Camden, Woodbury, Washington Twp. and Beyond
Press Release 3/3/2012
Music at Bunker Hill presented three outreach concerts between March 28 and April 16, remaining true to its mission, which states “Our artists inspire the next generation with their passion for the arts and standards of excellence.” Audiences ranged from seven years old through college graduate students, and the artists are excellent young professionals. These concerts were presented through a partnership with Target, part of ongoing efforts by Target to strengthen families and communities throughout the country.
Bassist Ranaan Meyer performed for the Boys and Girls Club of Camden on March 28 at 4:00 p.m. Meyer brings a fresh and agile approach to the double bass, making it sound more like a cello or violin. Ranaan was joined by pianist Norma Meyer, who is also his mother. As a musical duo they communicate effortlessly and play in many different musical styles including bluegrass, jazz, and classical. This event developed through a partnership with Art-Reach Philadelphia.
Cellist Sarah Rommel (subbing for Efe Baltacigil) and pianist Amy J. Yang played for the Woodbury Junior and Senior High School on April 2 at 10:50 a.m. Baltacigil and Yang, both extremely accomplished musicians, recently performed at the Turkish Embassy in Washington D.C. These young artists make music all over the world, but still find time for their hobbies. Baltacigil loves sailing and windsurfing and Yang loves literature, psychology and art, and is a fine artist herself. Selected students of Mrs. Teresa Savage also attended Mr. Baltacigil’s concert on April 1 in Sewell. The Greater Woodbury Arts Council assisted in planning and presenting this outreach concert.
Jason Vieaux gave a guitar mini-concert and master class at Washington Township High School on April 16 at 10:30 a.m. Vieaux has headed the Guitar Department at Cleveland Institute for eleven years and recently co-founded the Guitar Department at The Curtis Institute of Music with David Starobin. Vieaux maintains an active performing and recording schedule and recently released his new album, “The Music of Astor Piazzola” to widespread acclaim. Students from WTHS guitar classes (teacher Greg Janicki), Rowan and Montclair University will participate.
The four applicants selected to perform for Mr. Vieaux in the Master Class are:
Alex Pollock (freshman Rowan University) Fuoco by Roland Dyens
Joe Carbone (junior Rowan University) Capricho Arabe by Francisco Tarrega
Sebastian Villegas (senior Montclair University) "Esordio" from Sonata op.47 by Alberto Ginastera
David Graessle (graduate student Montclair University) Allemande from Cello Suite No.1 BWV 1007 J.S. Bach (Stanley Yates Transcription in C)
