Spring 2023 ENTRY FORM BELOW
The Sustainable Washington Township Creative Team is pleased to announce our exhibits scheduled for Spring 2023. We are now accepting submissions from local and regional amateur and professional artists for two exhibits, together themed as Natural Elements. A selected group of original artworks will be displayed at the Dr. Ross Beitzel Gallery at Rowan College of South Jersey and during live music concerts at the Beitzel Gallery and at Bunker Hill Presbyterian Church. An additional outdoor exhibit comprising digital reproductions of those works and others will be displayed at the Gallery in the Park in Washington Lake Park. All locations are in Sewell, New Jersey.
Exhibit of Original Art at the Dr. Ross Beitzel Gallery and Companion Concert Performances
The Dr. Ross Beitzel Gallery is located on the campus of Rowan College of South Jersey, and features works by local artists. The exhibit at the Beitzel Gallery (opening in March 2023) will comprise the original artworks selected to interpret individual pieces in the song cycle Rivers Are Our Brothers, music compositions written by Majel Connery. (See below.) The exhibit will feature a live concert by Connery and the Brothers Balliett at the Beitzel Gallery on April 11, sponsored by Music at Bunker Hill and the Gloucester County Cultural and Heritage Commission. The assembled works will move to Bunker Hill Presbyterian Church, the concert venue of Music at Bunker Hill on April 23, for a second live performance by Connery and the Brothers Balliett, Rivers Are Our Brothers: An Earth Day Celebration. Optional videos submitted by the featured visual artists that document their creations will be used for social media promotions and/or at the live concert.
Exhibit at The Gallery in the Park
The Gallery in the Park is an outdoor installation located at the Amphitheater in Washington Lake Park, and is a central venue in our Painting the Town Project. The exhibit at The Gallery in the Park will open in April 2023, and will remain in place through the Spring and into the Summer, to be viewed by visitors to the largest municipal park in New Jersey. The Park is the site of community festivals, concerts, entertainment and recreation events, and is frequented by thousands of individuals seeking leisure enjoyment outdoors. Washington Lake Park is located at 626 Hurffville-Cross Keys Road, Sewell, NJ.
Submissions for the Exhibits
The theme for both exhibits is “Natural Elements.” Specific categories for artworks include the subjects of Connery’s song cycle. Participants are referred to the music for inspiration (https://www.majelconnery.com/rivers-are-our-brothers):
1 Numbers in parentheses are lengths of music for the respective songs, in minutes and seconds
Images created in two-dimensional media are acceptable, including painting, drawing and photography.
Entries for both exhibits should be submitted as high resolution digital images of the artworks. Submitted artwork will be reviewed and curated for the exhibits by a committee of artists and art advocates from the Township community.
Original Art Exhibit Submissions
As noted above, artists are invited to submit digital images of artworks for the exhibit. Artists submitting work for consideration for the original art exhibit are also invited (THIS IS OPTIONAL) to submit an accompanying video documenting the creation of their respective works, in YouTube format. (Therefore, artists are encouraged to develop video recordings as they generate their artworks. The length of the submitted videos should match the times listed above for the respective category/song recordings.) One work will be selected in each of the categories listed above from the images submitted. For the exhibit of original art, prizes will be awarded for those selections.
The artists whose work is selected must deliver their original, framed artwork to the Dr. Ross Beitzel Gallery at Rowan College of South Jersey around March 20. Specific instructions will be provided. The requested videos may be screened at the live concerts. Additionally, images for the winning artworks will be included in the outdoor exhibit.
Gallery in the Park Exhibit Submissions

Preference is for files in TIF (TIFF) format, having a density of 240 dpi, and with color space sRGB. Selected images for the outdoor exhibit will be printed on weather-proof panels and hung along a paved walkway in the Amphitheater, visible to participants in Park events as well as casual strollers.
